The piece reimagines Rev Dr. Martin Luther King and el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz (Malcolm X) engaging in an opening game of chess. Though the two had only met once in 1964, the artist, C. Riley, wanted to depict the two honorable leaders facing off in a strategic battle, as they were both on opposite ends of the same fight for the rights of black people in America. Combining the elements on Realism, Abstract and Contemporary Art, this is a thought provoking piece with many elements and layers for the viewer to decipher.
