This is the first animated film by Michel Hazanavicius
During the war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a girl, bringing irreversible changes to the lives of the couple and those who cross her paths.
It has an almost folktale-like story set in Poland during World War II
This is by far the best 2024 release I’ve seen this year, and it’s mid-December 2024. Most of the plot takes place in the forest, which is so typical of the aforementioned folktales, and revolves around a couple of lumberjacks who adopt a Jewish girl who has been thrown off a deportation train that passed through their forest.
From a technical point of view, everything is also done perfectly
Her father threw her out to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot, so you can see for yourself, I just want to add that the film will reach deeply philosophical conclusions.
The visual aspect of the film is extraordinary
The drawing style is perfect, not too detailed, not too rough, mostly showing scenes with low lighting and dominant gray tones, thus underlining the horror of the most infamous war and mass destruction event in human history. And then there is the soundtrack, which is sublime: the soundtrack, the sound effects, the narration and the dubbing (I watched the original French version), all of it perfectly suited to present this gem of a film.
